The Meaning Of your Period Blood Color with FLO Living Founder Alisa Vitti

When you get your period, you’re probably thinking about a bunch of different things — maybe you have cramps, or cravings, or mood swings, or maybe you’re just focused on buying another box of tampons. But according to hormone guru Alisa Vitti, there’s one thing you might not be focusing on that could tell you a lot about your health: your period blood color. Read on to learn what Vitti has to say about the meaning of menstrual blood color, and how you can use this information to become more empowered in your health.

Vitti, founder of FLO Living and the so-called “period lady,” is passionate about empowering women to balance their hormones and take control of their monthly cycles. Luckily, as she discusses in the above clip, one of the most powerful tools for doing so is available every month for free. Your period blood color and texture, she explains, can tell you a great deal about what’s going on with your health and hormones. She puts it simply: “You can use it as a blood test. It’s blood.”

Vitti groups menstrual blood into four color groups, and says that your color can tell you a lot about your particular ratios of progesterone and estrogen. This information, in turn, can help you get to the root of a wide variety of symptoms, from bad PMS to infertility issues. The four color types are:

  • Brown-type
  • Pink-type
  • Blue-type
  • Red-type

The qualities of your menstrual blood contain “really valuable information that every woman should know every month,” says Vitti. She also points out that your period blood color is not static, meaning that it can change from month to month depending on what’s going on in your health and life. “All sorts of things, because of the link between the immune system and the endocrine system, can impact what shows up for you monthly,” Vitti says. She explains that your period blood is the best tool for understanding how your body is responding to the things in your life that are external to your endocrine system — like travel, illness, stressors, lifestyle changes, etc.

To help women understand and use this important and readily available information, Vitti developed a free tool, the Period Quiz, that lets you input the color and texture of your menstrual blood to pinpoint what’s going on with your hormones. Then, it tells you precisely how to tweak your diet and lifestyle to address any issues. As you adjust the food you eat, you can notice how your symptoms diminish and your period blood color changes. According to Vitti, most issues will go away within three menstrual cycles. “You can have a really wonky period today, and three periods from now have it be what it should be,” she says. That’s pretty amazing!
